Expert Training

SSY Trainee Scheme

With over 140 years’ experience, SSY is widely regarded as one of the world's most trusted names in broking, offering a comprehensive and integrated suite of broking services via its 25 local offices.

Through our London Trainee Scheme, successful applicants get the opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced names in shipping over a 12-month period. In addition to expert divisional training, we will also ensure the trainees are educated in the principals of shipping, as well as take part in networking opportunities and a series of port visits and vessel trips.

Due to our continued growth, we are now looking for a Trainee Chartering Broker to join our Dry Cargo Chartering team in Athens.

As a privately owned partnership, we are focused entirely on the needs of our clients and are agile and impartial in the way we do business. SSY operates from 25 offices across the globe and employs over 550 people, covering all the major shipping and commodity locations, and providing a round-the-clock service.

Job description:
Trainee Chartering broker to work in our Athens office closely with the Dry Cargo Chartering team to support and facilitate fixtures within the shipping market.

This role involves learning the fundamentals of chartering, building market knowledge, and developing client relationships.

Responsibilities:
* Clerical support for the Chartering team and our clients
* Data management
* Report generation
* Assisting with operational tasks on the Chartering desk

Skills required:
* Academic backgrounds in Business or Economics or Engineering, or those with a degree in Shipping or Maritime Studies.
* Applicants will be comfortable with basic Shipping knowledge, working with numbers and handling data efficiently, and will have strong IT skills.
* The role requires a confident, bilingual communicator with excellent proficiency in both written and spoken English and Greek.

Job description: SSY, one of the world’s largest international shipbroking groups, is looking to recruit a recent graduate/post-graduate to join our Athens team as a Junior Shipping Analyst. The job involves statistical and written analysis of the main shipping markets, focusing on the drivers of the underlying commodity trades as well as monitoring the development of the global fleet.

Responsibilities:
• Updating, monitoring and developing statistical databases used for research publications and consultancy reports
• Collating market data and processing datasets into reports and presentations
• Working closely with the S&P team to support ad-hoc internal and external requests as well as gain additional market insights
• Summarising fundamental market news

Skills required:
• Academic background preferably in quantitative subjects such as economics, statistics or shipping
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Excellent analytical, numerical and organisational skills
• Ability to manage large data sets
• Strong attention to detail
• Good time-management skills and ability to prioritise tasks according to deadlines
• Clear and concise verbal & written communication skills required to work alongside a global team
• Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher
• SQL or other programming language knowledge would be advantageous, but not required
